This week for our ’Fashionably Fit’ series, Style to Envy chatted with Nicole Perry, a young professional and blogger living in Boston. We found Nicole one day on Twitter, checked out her blog, tried a quick at home workout and after working up a good sweat contacted her for the feature. This series is literally a perfect fit see her story below and our Q&A.
I grew up in Martha’s Vineyard and now work as an Editor in Boston. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in English. In March of 2011, I started Pumps and Iron as a way to share my love for fitness, cooking and fashion.
Q: How do you stay active on a constant basis?
A: I find exercises and activities I enjoy doing. High intensity interval training is great because I can fit it in no matter how busy my schedule is right at home. Plus I’m a morning person and have plenty of time to go for a run before the sun even comes up.
Q: How would you describe your personal style?
A: More on the trendy side than classic, mixed with a bit of boho. I look for unique, standout pieces—especially shoes…six-inch, ankle-breaking, outrageous heels
Q: Who or what has been your greatest fashion influence?
A: I’ve always loved supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for events – polished and elegant, yet still sexy, and for casual days they are effortlessly put together. Thanks to Pinterest, I am looking more to fashion bloggers for style inspiration, Pink Peonies, Seams for a Desire and Cheyenne Meets Chanel are fabulous.
Q: Who or what has been your greatest fitness influence?
A: Zuzana Light – I discovered her workouts back when I was in college and facing the difficult challenge of losing my freshman 20. Her quick, brutal, at-home workouts were unlike anything I’d done prior and I was instantly hooked.
Q: What is the exercise you ‘love to hate’ the most? It works you but you HATE every second of it!
A: To say I despise yoga would be the understatement of the century! The amazing physical benefits of it are undeniable and I always feel great after. I want to like yoga but ten minutes in I’m bored silly and counting down until class is over.
Q: Biggest fitness accomplishment to date:
A: I ran my first half marathon in October and finished in under two hours despite tendonitis in my Achilles – I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to do.
Q: At the gym, are you fashionable or non-fashionable in your fitness attire?
A: It’s not my main priority to be fashionable, but when I feel good about the way I look, I have a much better attitude about working out. I do a lot of at-home workouts, so the occasional fashion faux pas can stay my little secret.
Q: What’s your eating/diet habits (paleo, eat clean, cheat day)?
A: I focus on eating wholesome, clean food and avoiding items that are highly processed. I do almost all my own cooking and eat 5-6 small meals a day to keep my metabolism cranking. A pint of ice cream every once in a while is good for the soul.
Q: Favorite food treat (clean eating) and naughty splurge:
A: I’ve recently become obsessed with roasted seaweed, it’s packed with nutrients and it’s extremely low in calories. My naughty splurge Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns ice cream – the main ingredient has got to be tiny bits of Heaven. But it can be hard to find and multiple times I go to the website and to track down a pint.
