Friday Feature – Fashion Designer Fotini

Happy Black Friday Everyone!

For our first Friday Feature, Style to Envy got a chance to chat with NYC/Canada based designer Fotini who just showed her Spring 2013 collection at Fashion Houston last week. This designer is fashionably inspirational coming from a career in finance and marketing to truly living her longtime dream of being a fashion designer. Her collection speaks for not just one woman but every woman.

Take a look at our Q&A with Fotini:

Q: What made you make a career change from finance and marketing to fashion?

A: Fashion was always my original dream plan, but I decided to follow in my father’s direction of finance and marketing. It actually taught me the fundamentals of business, especially how to be strategic in business. My dream has always been fashion so I decided to pursue it.

Q: How long has Fotini the designer been in the fashion business?

A: I started in 2008 so my line has been around for 4 seasons. I spent about three years in Italy studying the construction of corsetry beside old world ateliers in Bologna, Como and Bergamo thinking that maybe the path in fashion I would like to take. I learned so much from living in Old World Ateliers, a lot of what you see in my collections. I even consisted having my business in Milan but decided to have it based in Canada and NYC since I’m frequently in both places.

Q: What type of woman or audience does Fotini create for?

A: I design for women who are confident, strong and embraces being a woman. A woman that loves being sexy and feminine. My woman can range from a CEO to a socialite to pageant girls and so on because my woman is every woman.

Q: So you just showcased your Spring 2013 collection here in Houston last week, what was the inspiration behind your collection?

A: My inspiration for my Spring 2013 collection was French inspired by the Gardens of Versailles. I was inspired by feminine prints, impressions and watercolor paintings that spoke of romance in France.

Q: What made you unveil your collection at Fashion Houston 2012 in your first full runway show?

A: In New York, I’ve only done presentations during Fashion Week, but Houston reached out to me about showing during Fashion Houston. They loved my brand’s aesthetic and wanted me to be a featured designer here to showcase my new collection. It was a great opportunity because the Texas woman is the woman I design for; she loves colors, being feminine and sexy while on the go. It was a great opportunity and I received a great response from my collection.

Q: What iconic designers or people have impacted your fashion career?

A: A designer that has truly impacted my fashion career would have to be Tom Ford, he has been a huge inspiration to me. Also, Victoria Beckham is a huge inspiration to me as well as others.

Q: Any words of wisdom for anyone chasing a dream or career change?

A: Nothing worthwhile in life comes without sacrifice. If you believe in it, it can happen. Just never give up on what you believe is meant for you.

Fotini is surely a designer to keep an eye on with her refreshing aesthetic to bring romance and femininity back into fashion. To learn more about Fotini and her collections, stop by her official website and follow her on Twitter.
